Have you ever heard someone comment on how good someone looked; the hair, the clothes, the overall appearance just looked good? An antiquated way to say it was "that hat becomes you" or "that color becomes you". That was to say that whatever a person did to enhance their outward appearance worked, it benefitted their total look to the extent that it did the work of making that person look handsome or pretty or attractive.
Well, I took you " round about" to say....that's exactly what happens to the insides of us. We can eat so many things but the truth is, only certain things benefit our inward biological "appearance" of looking good. And that "looking good" is what you want to hear the doctor say, "everything looks good"! To be our biological best, including moods, attitudes, cognitive performance, as well as all the basics, we better think before we bite. I came across a great little article (and a good source of information) to really underline the importance of understanding our "machinery" and how it's our own personal responsibility to maintain the machine to the best of our ability....and, that includes finding a level of enjoyment and pleasure that is equally satisfying. Remember, molecules are what stuff is made of and there are rules as to how you put things together to have them be what they were intended to be. :) Bon Apetit! http://www.positivelypositive.com/2012/02/15/genes-and-jeans/

New food term - "nanomaterials", doesn't it sound delicious? It sounds like something a robot would eat, if you ask me. But, no, thanks to the "new food" science, which some people like to call "Frankenfoods" (because they are reminded of Frankenstein), we now should be worrying about the little microparticles that can possilble do HUGE damage to your body's physiology. And, trust me, that is something you don't want to hurt.
I thought this was an interesting quote from the link I'm sharing in this post: "In contrast to FDA's approach, all food ingredients that incorporate engineered nanomaterials must be submitted to regulators in Canada and the European Union before they can be marketed." When I read of situations where the FDA is NOT regulating something that is a true health concern to every man/woman and child, like GMO's or nanomaterials but that they are having people arrested and taking their farms because of raw milk, I really want to cry. Would someone like to give their thoughts on how they perceive the FDA to be, or not to be, actually protecting our food safety issues???? Bon Apetit! Here's the link on the nanomaterials: http://www.foodsafetynews.com/2011/12/caution-urged-with-nanoparticles-in-food/?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=111206 What a honey of a mess! It's getting so complicated in the food markets to know what you are REALLY eating, or not. If you like honey, or if you are just interested on how complicated and tricky food distributors/producers can be......check this article out:
http://www.foodsafetynews.com/2011/11/tests-show-most-store-honey-isnt-honey/ The "seed" of something is usually considered its 'genesis', its nucleus, where something germinates from to become something else. It's miraculous how the basis for our whole food chain, which we are MOST DEPENDENT upon comes from little, sometimes miniscule, seeds.
Likewise, an idea, a dream, and a controversy of with Fascist/Disctatorship-like characteristics can spring from 'a seed'! In previous posts I have referred to Genetically Modified Organisms (primarily food) and the HUGE concerns that we, as a consuming/dependent public should have regarding them. Not only are there some main concerns such as biological compatability and unknown health consequences, the most concerning is the idea that we no longer will have the freedom to produce our own food. Some people have referred to me, Elaine Parny, as an alarmist and that I unnecessarily focus on the negative. I can tell you this, if the public does not go out of its way to question, investigate and advocate, it will be subjected to tyranny in every area of their lives. And, with the control over food production, any ruling agency will, in fact, have the government sanctioned capacity to exploit your dependence on food and to regulate what you can and cannot have for food consumption, unconcerned as to your optimum health but rather prioritizing the producers profits. Case in point, please read the following: http://www.ams.usda.gov/AMSv1.0/ams.fetchTemplateData.do?template=TemplateU&navID=&page=Newsroom&result&dDocName=STELPRDC5092024&dID=152103&wf=false&description=USDA+Grants+Protection+to+40+New+Plant+Varieties+&topNav=Newsroom&leftNav=&rightNav1=&rightNav2= Have you ever heard a person go on about how "good" a chocolate cream pie with tons of 'whipped cream' tasted? Or, how delicious was the fried chicken that grandma made? We really have to realize that we do, in fact, eat many different types of food and many of them we consider good and delicious when, in fact, they are poisening our physical body and causing all sorts of health problems, both major and minor. In addition, whether or not we realize there is a health problem, we often don't realize that we could, in fact, be having better body/mind performance if only we ate food and exercised with that being our end goal. I'm as guilty as the next person. However, as I learn more and more about the body/mind/food connection, I can't help but maintain that there are many good & delicious 'tastes' that will appeal to our personal preferences but it's as we become more knowledgable as to the nutritional content of what it is that we are eating and how it affects our body/mind performance, we will become increasingly more mindful of what it is that we are eating and what is involved in the production of those food items. With that knowledge, we then become better able to participate in the production of that food and/or help to monitor and control what is put on the market for human/animal consuption, rather than naively believing that the corporate food industry has our best health in mind.
Given my 'soapbox' launching of my post today, I'll just say I found a little link that gives some simple information regarding 10 different nutrients and tells what they are, why they are beneficial and where we can look to add them to our eating pleasure. Bon Apetit! http://fitbie.msn.com/eat-right/tips/10-super-nutrients-flat-belly?GT1=50008 I came across an article this morning that really got me to thinking. For instance, I've always had the understading, in my limited knowledge, that when there was a glut of something on the market, it would bring the price of that item down. I understand, as with any production, you want to make the best money you can for your efforts, and the better the profit margin, the more you like it. So, after reading this article, I see that when the US markets had an excess of dark chicken meat, they sold outside of the country. I guess I would have liked to have seen that commodity come down so that more Americans would have access to it and buy it. When I was a single mother with three children, I had to be highly selective when it came to meat purchases which were the costliest. And, chicken/turkey legs were where I could get the most real food for the most affordable price.
The other aspect of this article that really deomonstrates how we as consumers affect these kinds of decisions is that we(as the public) indicated that we didn't really want to make significant purchases of dark chicken meat. I can only speculate why that might be. Possibly, we perceive dark chicken meat to be 'poor peoples food'? Just a thought. So, the people who had the buying power rejected the dark meat, and it went to overseas markets. Interesting. Then, I noted that the dark chicken meat is actually higher in nurtritional content than the white chicken meat. So, it would seam that it didn't matter what the real value was of the chicken meat, it was the 'look' and perception of the white meat that made it more desirable over the dark meat which was lost to the market. I wonder if there's anyone who studies these kinds of things??? Maybe it would be the psycho/sociology of food and how it affects the public food market? Now, there's a thesis for some brave soul! Here's the link that got me going: http://www.delish.com/food/recalls-reviews/what-to-do-with-dark-chicken-meat?GT1=47001 Bon Apetit! We all LOVE good food and it's that love that usually causes us to seek out everything 'food'. We love to look at the pictures, we're enthralled with the foodie programs and one of our greatest trophies is to say we ate with some pretigious chef or at in an exclusive restaurant. We're movitvated to spend that little extra to buy the best, when we can. Writing this post, I'm hoping to really bring attention to the 'other side' of good eating, our bodies need us to seek out and ingest key foods so that our body can run as efficiently as possible and do it's job to keep us healthy and functioning at our best. I try to read over articles regarding health maintenance and it seems that two subjects keep coming up in a variety of illnesses and health issues, "inflamation" and "immunity". I encourage you to do a little web surfing and see for yourself how important it is to tend to these two items regarding your own health and see how you might incorporate some healthy personal choices to raise your own level of health.
I've included a link that focuses on boosting your immunity through specific foods and some simple 'tricks' you can do that will boost your immunity so that your immunity can do a better job keeping you well, especially through the cold and flu season. Bon Apetit! http://co101w.col101.mail.live.com/default.aspx?wa=wsignin1.0 I couldn't resist putting up another blurp regarding food politics. Most everyone knows what a 'player' is, especially in the dating world. Well, there's an old saying about 'odd bedfellows' or one that talks about 'birds of a feather flock together'. The point I'm trying to make is that when a person hears or reads about a particular subject, especially when it's relative to food issues, you should take a minute to look at the bigger story. As it's said, "there's two sides to every coin".
Maybe you've seen an article here or there or heard someone talk about drinking raw milk? I hope that, as subjects like this come up, we make the effort to understand why it's a very important issue and who all has a vested interest in this question and what do they get, depending on the answer of whether or not to make it illegal. Yes, raw milk can become a 'controlled substance' if we allow this to happen through our apathy. I encourage you to read a little deeper into the issue and decide for yourself. I've included a link to introduce you to the controversy and to help get you started into your own research to get the truth on the issue of raw milk: http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2010/12/15/the-war-over-raw-milk.aspx Bon Apetit! Remember, should anyone have as problem with what I post, I, Elaine Parny am solely responsible for what appears in this blog. Alot of people have said to me, "I don't care for politics". I'm here to tell you, you better get political TODAY when it comes to the food you eat because your choices are going to be getting fewer and fewer. Case in point, please look over the links I've posted to see how the seed industry (seeds being where most plant food originates), is being taken over and dictated by Mansanto and the government. Read and decide for yourself :

You have your standard group: lettuce, onions, tomatoes, potatoes and corn. What else do you need? I would like to introduce you to some of the vegetables that you aren't very familiar with and provide you with some of their health benefits. Let's start with Chard:

Elaine ParnyWhen Roland and I met, I was one of those people who opened the box or can and warmed up the family meal. After our marriage in 2005, I truely began to appreciate what food is really about, not only that it can taste very good, and be nutritious, but that it can be a celebration of who you are and the people that you share it with.
